Queen Elizabeth Coronation Schools Tournament
2024
The 70th playing of the Queen Elizabeth Coronation School Trophy was held at the Royal Burgess Golfing Society in the middle of September. Over 150 golfers represented their schools in the traditional foursomes matches over three days.
First out were Heriots against Edinburgh Accies. Everyone was back in the clubhouse relatively early, with the Accies not troubling the scorers.
There were two stand out matches on the Friday. The Burgess member Rob Watson and Rich Johnston coming from 5 down with 6 to play against Repton to win on the 21st hole and squeeze into the second round. Then, in the last match out on the course on Friday evening, Morrisons won on the 22nd hole to just beat Hutcheson’s.
On Saturday morning, there were some close ties with last year’s runners up Glasgow High just easing past Uppingham with the final 2 matches being decided on the 18th green and Lenzie needing to go to the 19th Green to win the deciding match against Kelvinside.
The Saturday afternoon games are traditionally tight affairs. Holders Glasgow Academy being knocked out by Morrisons, Loretto winning the crucial 3rd tie on the 21st against Lenzie, but the closest match was Glasgow High against Dollar, with the Glasgow side eventually winning the key tie on the 23rd hole.
All the golf was played under a heavy cloud base with a smattering of light rain..
The Final, played mostly in the rain, saw Glasgow High take on and ultimately beat Heriots 2 ½ to ½.
There were lots of positive compliments on the state of the course and the quality of the facilities over the 3 days. Cranleigh must have particularly enjoyed the Burgess facilities because although they were knocked out on the Friday, they attended the QE Dinner here on the Friday night as well as having breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning.
